The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have issued a new update with respect to the injury of India’s middle-order batting star.

Iyer missed India’s Super Four encounter against Pakistan due to back spasms. The Mumbai batter made a comeback into the side during the Asia Cup. He had missed cricketing action for the last few months due to a bulging slipped disc and the follow-up surgery.

He featured twice in the tournament but only batted once in the Group A encounter against Pakistan. He raced to 14 runs in just nine balls, before being caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of Haris Rauf.

The update stated that while Iyer was feeling better, he hadn’t fully recovered from the back spasms. He has been advised a rest by the medical team. Therefore, the batter would miss India’s second Super Four encounter in the Asia Cup as well.

Iyer’s presence is key to the India batting line-up, and is a possible solution to their number four quandary. The batter has played 21 innings at the position with 819 runs to his name at an average of 45.5.

In an interview with the BCCI, Iyer had stated that he was focusing on staying in the present, “I’m happy being where I am. I’m ticking all the boxes day by day. So happy to be here right now and embracing each and every moment.”

In his absence, KL Rahul batted at number four against Pakistan and shined with a match-winning 111*. This was also Rahul’s return after a prolonged absence due to an injury.
